Calzone

Ingredients

1 1/2 tsp of dry yeast

1 tsp of sugar

1/2 cup of warm water

3 cups of all purpose flour

Pinch of salt

Directions

Mix the yeast, sugar, and water. Set aside for 5 min.

Add the flour and salt and mix everything well.

The dough should be flexible.

Roll out the dough in a circular shape in sections big enough for one calzone. Make sure it is not too thin or else it will break and the filling will spill out.

Filling

3/4 cup of shredded mozzarella

3/4 cup of grated Parmesan

Pinch of salt in each calzone

Pinch of pepper in each calzone

7 oz (200 g) of ham or salami

10 oz (about 300 g) of mushrooms

6 oz (170 g) can of tomato paste

*Optional corn, peppers, olives, onions

Directions

Dice the ham or salami.

On a skillet, cook the sliced mushrooms with a little bit of onion and olive oil until they become a light brown.

On the pieces of dough, large enough for one calzone each, spread some tomato paste on the dough.

Add ham or salami, mushrooms, cheese, spices, and any other vegetable you like, on one half of the dough.

Fold the empty part of the dough over the one with the filling and close the calzone tightly.

Place the calzones on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper.

Smear some olive oil on top of each calzone.

Bake at 435 F (225 C) for 15-20 min. They will become golden.

Makes about 6 calzones.

Thoughts

I recently went to an Italian restaurant and saw calzones on the menu, and at that moment, I remembered I have a really good calzone recipe I have not made for a long time. I’m glad I revisited this wonderful recipe.

My family and I really enjoyed this dinner option. It is similar to pizza, but the dough is different and everyone can have their own personal calzone. These are another delicious food from the Italian cuisine.

I had a great time making them, and even a better time eating them. You can really personalize them, and place everyone’s favorite ingredients such as olives or peppers in their calzone making everyone at the dinner table satisfied. You can make a purely veggie and cheese calzone or, if you love meat, you can put different types of ham, salami, and sausage in them.

The ingredients I gave for the filling are a delicious backbone to a variety of additions you can make to it.

Share in the comments on what you added to your filling! I’d love to hear how you personalized yours!

Enjoy 🙂

I love calzone too! I haven’t made it yet, but I’m excited to make it. I’m thinking maybe mushroom, beef and cheese. Then for vegetarian I’ll try mushroom, spinach and cheese.
