Pour the mixture into a heat resistant container of your choice.

Place that container into a pan. Pour boiling water into the pan (about 1 in of water).

Bake at 350 F (180 C) for 50-60 min.  The mixture will jiggle when ready. Let it cool.

Take the flan out of it’s container once it has cooled and pour the caramelized sugar on top.

Thoughts

Flan is a custard or pudding type of dessert. It is very light, soft, and jiggly. The caramel topping is the perfect sweet addition to the pastry.

Flan varies between cultures. It’s origins come from Southern Europe, but it has come into many different cultures around the world and each culture brings it’s own twist to it. Flan is popular in multiple Latin American and Asian countries. Each country adds it’s own special touch to it making this dessert very diverse. One flan is not like the other.

The recipe I tried is only one of many different options. I really liked it. It wasn’t too sweet. The texture was light and soft, just as it should be. It was quick an easy to make. My family really enjoyed it and is already asking for more 🙂

Enjoy 🙂

This looks delicious and you make it so easy. I remember working with some recipes when I worked in kitchens and flan went straight into the too hard basket. Not anymore!

  10. This looks yummy! Didn’t know you can add cream cheese to flan… I usually make creme caramel according to French recipes… more like making a custard and baking…. This looks like a twist on that! Shall give yours a try..

Our daughter-in-law, who is from Brazil, makes a version of this for Christmas Day – definitely beats English christmas pudding. I’d not heard of adding cream cheese before though – I may feel it necessary to test this out.
